Everything was perfect, the console was complete and new, the Mario kart code was there and I redeemed very easily. And most importantly, the console arrived 3 days before planned, I couldn’t be happier.

The media could not be loaded.

I’m really satisfied with this. However, it really depends on what you’re after and it might not suit everyone.

I’m a gamer and have been since the beginning, I currently have everything, a Ps5, Xbox, Gaming PC, Steam deck, smaller emulators and of course a Switch OLED. I was a bit apprehensive to get this due to the price and a small amount of launch titles available. To be fair, it’s a good line up but it’s still early days. Depending what you own and your use case, this might well be for you or it might be worth holding off.

Firstly, I’ve noticed a lot talking about the Seal being broken on the box. I looked into this and it seems to be country wide across all outlets. Mine was not broken, however, I notice that a new one had been stuck over one that was. It doesn’t concern me as it just seems to be a common thing everywhere and it’s possible that the game code was not included in some boxes so they needed to check it was. With that said, make sure you open it the right way round, as I didn’t and everything fell right out (onto my bed!). Everything was wrapped properly and there were no fingerprints on anything.

Setup was okay. It was easy and not too time consuming but it wasn’t quite turn on and play. I did need to update the system and I needed my OLED model to transfer saves over. This required my device for authentication as well (phone/tablet) providing you have that security feature enabled you will need it to. It also needed both Switches to be connected to the power adapter. I couldn’t do but I got around it by just swapping the adapter between them when it asked. I was up and running from box to play in about 20 minutes, that includes putting on a screen protector.

Weight wise it comes in around 534g a bit heavier than the 420g OLED. It’s still comfortable to hold and the weight is better distributed because of the larger screen.

The LCD screen is surprisingly good, it’s not an OLED no, but actually, I found the darker aspects is actually more dark grey where the OLED seemed to have a green tinge on things (except for the proper black, which just can’t be beaten on the OLED). It’s nice and vibrant and it’s one of the better LCD’s I’ve seen, so I think Nintendo did a good job there.

I’ve heard people complain about HDR on TV when docked. I think the HDR looks great but you do need to calibrate it, if you do this correctly it should look great. Apparently, it’s much better on TV’s with HGiG (HDR Gaming Interest Group) and I’m not even sure my TV has that or not, but I’m very happy with the picture and it doesn’t look washed out, but I did spend some time getting it right.

I’m not a fan of the pricing of the games, I’m really not a fan of having to pay extra for Switch 2 Versions, but if you have the membership you do get the upgrade packs for Zelda.

I’ve played a few back compatibility games and I’ve found that ones that struggled before were at least a lot more consistent now. For example, Xenoblade was all over the place on the original but now it’s nice and smooth, even if it is just 30FPS. Some games with uncapped frame rates get vastly improved!

Some games, not all, might actually look a bit worse on the console when undocked, for example, Bayonetta looks a bit worse due to the larger screen but the console still recognising it as undocked and using the originals code. This isn’t a bug but it’s possible it will get fixed in the future. The difference isn’t night and day but it’s noticeable and only on some games.

The battery life is okay, it’s dependent on the screen brightness and games of course and I’ve heard there’s actually an issue where the percentage isn’t correct with people saying they’ve continued playing for a while after the percentage reads 0%. I believe Nintendo is aware of this and a fix is coming. New console issues really.

The Joycons are better and removing them is very simple! The mouse is surprisingly good and even works well on my bed with just the sheet under it. They’re larger and much better suited towards larger hands.

Mario Kart World looks fantastic as do the new launch titles. Load times are improved slightly.

Now, is it for you? If you’ve never owned an original Switch, then this is a great console to start with. If you want to have a handheld console, then again, this is really a good console. If you primarily play in docked mode then this is where things get a bit tricky. Currently, because of the large price if you own any other main console (Ps5/Xbox SX) then it can’t really compete. Games like cyberpunk will still look and have better performance on the other consoles compared to the switch. If you’re mainly into third party studio games, then you won’t be getting an overall boost here. Even compared to the Ps4 Pro and Series X it can get a bit tricky and I’d say to hold off for a while. If you don’t have any other console but just a Switch 1 then this is clearly an upgrade but you’ll have to ask your wallet if it’s a £439 upgrade. Currently, you aren’t missing out on a lot and there’s some practices Nintendo are doing I’m really not a fan of but at the end of the day, if you want the best of the best in regards to Nintendo, you’re a collector, you can afford it easily, or you really want improvements to your previous library, then I think the Switch 2 is a fantastic system that has played it safe without bringing a lot of new innovation, at least yet. I’m very happy with it and as a gamer, I’m pleased with it ultimately.

I have owned an original Switch since 2017 and it’s easily my favorite console, including my PS5. Excellent first party games, portability, versatility, it’s almost perfect. It just lacks processing power, so here comes the Switch 2 to resolve that. It is a fantastic evolution of the original Switch concept.

Lets start with the hardware. It has a way bigger 8 inch 1080p screen with 120hz, VRR and HDR. The screen is not OLED but still looks amazing, it’s way better than the LCD in the original switch. The build quality is much better than even the OLED model, with larger, more comfortable Joy Cons. Most importantly, the Switch 2 is 10 times more powerful than the original according to Nintendo and Nvidea. This not only means that games look better, they can also be much bigger in scope, have more complex game mechanics and run at higher framerates. The system has much faster storage, the joycons are magnetic for easier attaching, and they include mouse sensors for new types of gameplay. It’s a big generational leap from a hardware standpoint.

Mario kart world runs like a dream and looks incredible in 4k at 60fps. The lineup of games is impressive: Donkey Kong bonanza, Metroid prime 4, Pokemon legends ZA, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule warriors and The Duskbloods are all within the first few months, with tons more sure to come later.

The system is backwards compatible, and older Switch games run better even without patches, but some games do get free patches to reach higher resolutions and framerates. For example, Super Mario Odyssey runs at 4k 60fps with a free patch. Some games have paid upgrades, which is not ideal, but the upgrades aren’t expensive (£7.99 for Zelda tears of the kingdom’s upgrade, or included in Switch online’s expansion pack). Some of these paid upgrades come with new content, and cost more to match, for example Mario party jamboree has new mini games that use the mouse sensor and the optional camera accessory. As a side note, any USB camera can be used, but the official one is really good and has a privacy shutter.

The Switch has a huge back catalogue of third party games, but Switch 2 will get more than ever due to its hardware being much closer to PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. Games won’t look as sharp as those systems, but still look really good. With this system, you may not need to have a PS5/Xbox to play some of the latest third party releases, which was the case on Switch 1, and you still get all the Nintendo exclusives.

The OS and features are similar but much faster and slicker, especially the eShop. The new game chat feature works well and has safeguards for younger users, with parents able to disable it using the parental controls app.

The system wiggles a bit in the dock, which did concern me initially, but this is apparently intentional to reduce wear and tear when sliding the system into the dock repeatedly.

A few people mentioned the broken seal, this was true for mine too. Apparently it’s due to the seals being made of a weak material that can break over time. I wouldn’t worry too much, if the Mario Kart World code works then you’re good, if it doesn’t then exchange it for another console with Amazon.

    Buying guide:

If you want a Switch and you don’t already have one, get this one.

If you already have one, but want to play your games at their best, or play new exclusive games, get this one.

If you’re only interested in new exclusive games, maybe wait a year for more to come out. By then, it’s likely some other big games like a new 3D Mario will be available.

If the price is an issue, the Switch 1 is still a fantastic system and is still getting new games for a while yet, such as Tomodachi Life in 2026. I recommend the OLED model, the standard and lite models are quite outdated now. You can get the OLED for around £220 on sale.

Switch 2 will be supported for at least 4 years, most likely 8 years like the original, so you can wait for a good deal if needed. The game library and feature set will get better over time too.

As for accessories, I recommend the Switch 2 pro controller. It looks similar to the switch pro controller, but has a headphone jack, assignable grib buttons, better ergonomics and better rumble. All the switch 1 accessories still work if you’re not planning to buy new ones yet.

I’d recommend a Switch online subscription to get the most out of the system. This lets you play online, and gives you access to game chat and some classic NES, SNES and GameBoy games. This is approx £18 a year. There’s also an expansion pack tier which gives you the Zelda game upgrade packs as well as some dlc for switch 1 games and access to N64, GameCube and GBA classic games. The expansion pack is £35 a year, but both tiers can be made much cheaper by sharing a family subscription with others, even with Switch 1 owners.

In conclusion, this is an excellent console from Nintendo, and it already has a strong game lineup. I highly recommend it.

  4. Kindle Customer

The Nintendo switch came perfectly fine, the top seal was slightly open but I guess it’s because of security issues during the shipment; everything was nice and new, the code also is working and for residents of UAE it could appear as an error if you try to insert the code, so you need to change the location of the Nintendo to an other country to be allowed to put the code since it comes from the UK and Eshop doesn’t exist here; also the Nintendo came 3 days before the supposed delivery date so

  5. Xavier Andries

the box was open and the game code was used (I couldn’t redeem it)

  6. Talal Ahmed

Both seals on the box were cut.

  7. Diego Acevedo
